“FIMA a new organisation within the World Ju-Jitsu Federation, is dedicated to the advancement of females in martial arts. FIMA acts as a role model for the younger generation in the once male dominated sport.
A syllabus has been set up for Women in martial arts by the National Coach with the assistance of the International Technical Director and International female martial arts coaches from Australia, United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium, Norway, Ireland, Germany, Iceland and Israel. This syllabus was designed so that females know the rules for survival within the bands of the law.”
Sensei Alan Campbell – National Coach
We believe there is no reason that enjoyable and empowering martial arts are dominated by men – women have reservations for many reasons that have failed to be checked until now with the introduction of FIMA
Fiction – An average of 40% less muscle mass puts women at a significant disadvantage to their male peers.
Fact – Ju-jitsu is all about technique. Strength becomes completely insignificant when you can throw a 200lb opponent simply by turning their wrist in the right direction.
Fiction – A women will find it difficult to integrate into a class of mainly men.
Fact – You’ll find all our new students are nervous about fitting it, and looking silly in front of everyone. The truth is that everyone is the class will welcome you and go out of their way to help with any techniques, as they too were once red belts. You will find it incredibly easy to join a class, and you’ll be glad you did!
Fiction – Women train better with all women classes
Fact – It is true that training with other women can help with confidence, but the big problem is that we all need to train with as many body types as possible… imagine having only trained Ju-jitsu with other women for 2 years and then being confronted by an aggresive male attacker? Would you be confident in your techniques, or would the unfamiliar fear leave your mind blank?
Fiction – Sports like martial arts often see women patronised, held back and belittled.
Fact – You’ll find massive amounts of respect from your fellow peers and encouragement from everyone. Many of our highly qualified black belts are women, who have gone on to open their own clubs and continue to teach.
